Welcoming Laura Ferguson as our new Team Vicar
On Sunday 13th June Revd. Laura Ferguson was licensed as the new Team Vicar in the Team Parish of St Luke in the City Liverpool, of which St Bride’s is a part. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic Laura’s licensing service was conducted online via Zoom by Rt. Revd. Beverley Mason, Bishop of Warrington and Ven. Mike McGurk, Archdeacon of Liverpool. The service was recorded and is available to watch here.
Laura has written a brief biography to introduce herself:
I’m Laura Ferguson, priest, married to Mikey, mum of three, and lover of comedy, art, design and food.
I felt the call to ordination just after I decided to seriously follow Christ. This was a surprise to me and my journey of faith has been full of surprises ever since. After feeling this call my vicar offered me a job as youth and children’s worker job at our church in Plymouth and so I spent two years creating, praying, chatting and giggling with younger people.
I then went on to train for ordination in Cambridge where I spent lots of time reading books, campaigning for residents rights and setting up a bar. A BBC news report about Liverpool council selling houses for £1 was what led me to explore curacies in the North West and I ended up working in the urban priority area of Kensington learning about true hospitality from asylum seekers amongst many other things. Here I met Mikey and in 2016 we married and relocated to Bristol where he trained for ordination.
I volunteered as a chaplain at Trinity College and enjoyed hearing the students vocational stories. I became a mum to Rae my eldest daughter (now 3) and Nel (now 2). After our time in Bristol we moved back to Liverpool Diocese where Mikey is now in his 2nd year of curacy in Sutton, St Helens and where we have just welcomed our first son George (now 5 months) to the family.
The last few years have been child-orientated for me so it has been another surprise to have found this dream role. I can’t wait to meet people of all ages and backgrounds and to minister alongside this diverse and creative Parish.
We wish Laura a very warm welcome to the Parish! Please pray for Laura, her family and the rest of the Parish leadership team as we all begin this new chapter of our story with God.
